Evergreen Summer Youth Program: 5 Benefits of Strength and Conditioning for Teens
By Coach Keller
As summer kicks off and you are exploring camps and programs for your teens, we’ve got the best solution for both fun and fitness! We know Bellingham kids are active– mountain biking, basketball, volleyball, soccer… the list goes on. Investing in strength and conditioning for your child not only improves their performance and resilience to injury in their sports, it also cultivates improved mental health, attention span and concentration, body awareness, self-confidence, and so much more.
Evergreen Strength is excited to launch our 8-week Summer Youth Program! Starting July 15th, kids ages 12-16 will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1pm at the gym for an hour of youth-specific strength and conditioning. Led by Coach Jake and Coach Mel, two experts in athletic training and youth programming, your child will be immersed in a safe and fun learning environment. Workouts will include kettlebell and dumbbell movements, plyometrics, agility, interval and speed training, power production, and strength-building all with a focus on form and technique.
Not sure if strength and conditioning will help your child? Keep reading for our 5 favorite benefits of youth training!
1. Enhance Athletic Performance
Whether your child is a competitive athlete or not, strength and conditioning plays a pivotal role in preparing young athletes for all of their activities. By focusing on specific muscle groups and movement patterns, teens can build endurance, agility, and strength tailored to their chosen sports, improving their overall fitness. This targeted training not only reduces the risk of injuries but also enhances their performance potential. When they are stronger and more confident in their bodies, they become stronger and more confident in their sports. By building a solid workout foundation when they are young, they will be more likely to remain healthy, active people in the future.
2. Improve Body Awareness and Self Esteem
Beyond the physical benefits, strength and conditioning programs foster heightened body awareness and improved self esteem. As teens learn proper techniques under the guidance of our experienced coaches, they develop a deeper understanding of their bodies' capabilities and limitations. This self-awareness translates into more efficient movements on the slopes, trails, or sports fields, ultimately refining their skills and boosting their confidence. Simultaneously, training empowers them to take responsibility for their health, take pride in what their bodies are capable of doing, and build their confidence to try hard or new activities. Studies show that children’s self-esteem and mental health also significantly improve with exercise and training. a little self-confidence goes a long way!
3. Academic Benefits
Perhaps not surprisingly, the benefits of strength and conditioning extend beyond the physiological realm. Research also indicates a positive correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement among adolescents. Engaging in regular exercise has been shown to enhance cognitive function, improve attention span, and promote better classroom performance. By participating in structured training sessions, teens not only strengthen their muscles but also sharpen their focus and academic potential.
4. Build Discipline and Confidence
Committing to a summer youth training program at Evergreen will instill invaluable life skills in teens. From setting goals and adhering to a structured fitness regimen, to overcoming challenges and celebrating achievements with their peers, strength and conditioning training cultivates discipline and resilience. These traits are not only essential for athletic success but also lay a solid foundation for future personal and professional endeavors.
