Why In-Person Coaching Matters
By Coach Keller
These days there are a million ways to get a great workout. You can follow a training program, watch a YouTube video, use an app (personally we love EvergreenGO), build a home gym, or walk into an open gym and create your own routine. All of these can be valuable tools for getting stronger.
But, in our endlessly tech-focused world, there’s something incredibly beneficial about having a real coach in the room with you.
In-person coaching gives you real-time feedback, accountability, and an individualized experience that can be difficult to replicate when you’re training entirely on your own. When you come to a class at Evergreen or work one-on-one with a personal trainer, you’re not just following a workout, you have someone there to help you maximize your time and effort. And AI has yet to give you a great high-five after your workout.
Real-Time Feedback
One of the biggest benefits of a coach is having a knowledgeable and experienced set of eyes on your movement.
A coach can see things you may not notice yourself: a change in your squat depth, your knee shifting during a lunge, your back position during a deadlift, or the fact that you’re moving a weight more easily than you realize. They can give you a cue, make a small adjustment, or demonstrate a movement in a way that immediately makes it click.
And coaching isn’t just about correcting technique. Your coach can help you determine when to increase the weight, when to back off, and when to modify an exercise based on how you’re feeling that day or with any injuries you might be working through.
Those decisions add up over time, leading to better movement patterns, technique, and form. Which leads to you getting stronger, faster.
Accountability That Gets You Through the Door
Even the best training plan only works if you consistently show up.
Having a scheduled class and a coach waiting for you creates a powerful layer of accountability. The best part? You don’t have to decide what you’re doing every time you walk into the gym, and you don’t have to rely entirely on your own motivation to get started. Those are two of the hardest aspects of a fitness routine.
Once you’re there, your coach (and the other members in class!) help you get to work.
And on the days when you’re tired, stressed, or not feeling particularly motivated, that can make all the difference.
Learn While You Train
In-person coaching also gives you the opportunity to learn how to train better, not just complete a workout.
Your coach can explain why you’re doing a particular movement, what you should feel, how an exercise fits into your larger program or fitness goals, and how to adjust it when something doesn’t feel right. Your body begins to remember what the right position feels like, which muscles should be firing, and as a result you are able to jump into movements easier. Over time, you become more knowledgeable and confident in the gym.
You also learn how to push yourself appropriately. There’s a big difference between training hard and simply doing more, and a good coach helps you understand where that line is. Some days the workouts are meant to be fast and efficient, other days they are supposed to be slow and heavy.
The Energy of a Class
There’s also something special about training alongside other people. We are biased, but the Evergreen community has the best members.
A coached class gives you the energy and camaraderie of a group while still providing individual attention from your coach. You get to work toward your own goals while being surrounded by people who are putting in the work, too. It’s better to suffer together, as they say… :) Plus, it is a great feeling to come to class and see that one person who always cheers you on or pushes you to try just a little bit harder. Who knows, you might also be that person for someone else.
You don’t need to be the strongest person in the room. You just need to show up, put in the effort, and keep progressing.
When Private Training Makes Sense
Group coaching offers an excellent combination of instruction, accountability, and community. But if you want an even more individualized experience, private training takes that a step further.
With one-on-one coaching, your entire session can be built around your specific goals, experience, movement patterns, and limitations. This is also a great option if you are recovering from an injury, are experiencing major changes in your body, or have specific weight-loss goals. Your coach can make adjustments in real time and devote their full attention to your training.
Whether you train in a class or work one-on-one with a coach, the biggest advantage of in-person training is simple: you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.
You have someone there to teach you, challenge you, adjust the plan when necessary, and help you keep moving towards the best version of yourself.
We look forward to seeing you in class soon!
